Write Away Creative Writing Workshops

Approach

The AWA method has been used successfully with experienced writers as well as beginners. It has been particularly effective in helping those whose voices have traditionally been silenced by poverty, discrimination, illness, age or other obstacles to gain the powerful combination of language and confidence to overcome social barriers. While it is not therapy, it has great healing potential for writers from all backgrounds.

Amherst Writers & Artists Methodology

The Amherst Writers & Artists (AWA) methodology is based on a simple philosophy: every one is a writer, and every writer deserves a safe environment in which to launch his or her work.

Following each confidential writing period in the workshop, each participant is encouraged, but not required, to read his or her work. The group responds with the help of the trained workshop leader, to minimize the personal vulnerability of the writer. The lack of critical response to brand new work enables participants to expose aspects of their creative minds, leading the writer to his or her truest voice.
